The Crime Investigation Department (CID) Investigation Unit has busted a network of arms smugglers and has recovered a big cache of illegal arms and ammunitions. This is the second biggest recovery of arms made by the CID Investigation Unit in the month of January. Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Sindh, Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak, has rewarded the team with Rs0.5 million.
SSP CID Investigation Aslam Khan addressing a press conference at the CID Head Office said that he received information that another network of arms smuggler was present in the city and was hiding in Banaras with a huge quantity of arms.
Acting on the information he directed his patrolling officer Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Aleem Lashari to conduct a raid.
The CID police cordoned off the area near Valika, Banaras, and SITE Town and after a brief encounter arrested Mohammed Arshad alias Mohammed Rashid with his taxi (JN-6044) and also recovered arms and ammunition. Arshad is an inter-provincial smuggler. His two accomplices managed to flee.
During investigation the police also recovered seven Kalashnikovs, one 22-bore rifle, eight 44-bore rifles, two 8mm rifles, two TT pistols, 11 hand grenades, and some 5,000 rounds.
SSP Khan said that the accused smuggled weapons from the Northern areas including Kohat through coaches of Shalimar, Mardan, Swat and Shahid and used to deliver them to their customers in Karachi using a taxi (JN-6044).
The arrested accused used to live in Kohat where his main accomplice Noorul-Islam provided him arms and ammunition.
Arshad said that he belonged to Kohat and was involved in this business for the past several years. Islam is their main dealer who had good contacts with influential personalities. He further said that all his illegal smuggled arms came through intercity buses which were stationed at Sohrab Goth and Banaras Chowk, where their group’s third man Siraj, a dealer in Karachi, shifted the delivered arms to Metroville and dumped it at their hideout.
Moreover, they usually dumped arms in various places in Sohrab Goth and contacted customers later for delivery. The accused also disclosed that his permanent buyers were “Jamal” in Quaidabad, “Ali” in Pak Colony, “Hashim” and “Anwer”. Furthermore, the above people have links with his leader Islam and before delivery they deposited 50 per cent payment into the account of the accused dealer Islam and later on delivery they paid the balance 50 per cent.
He further confessed that they usually supply arms to criminal groups. There are about 15 groups working in Karachi involved in selling arms of which three were busted by the CID police.
The accused Arshad further disclosed that there is a huge demand for Kalashnikovs and .222 rifles by groups in Karachi and he usually sells KKs for Rs45,000 and .222 rifles for Rs35,000, while bullets of both weapons are sold at Rs20,000 for 500 bullets. Further probe is underway.
